Virginia au Augustus

Mustangthe Sovereign

The sharpest mind in the Institute, and a Gold who actually wonders what her Color has done. Darrow first calls her Mustang at their initial meeting, seeing her ride a dappled mustang; her real name, Virginia, comes later.

Virginia is the daughter of Nero and the twin of Adrius. She has the rare gift of inspiring loyalty instead of commanding it: at the The Institute she builds House Minerva on food and fair dealing while the other houses resort to slaves and terror.

Darrow captures her, then loses her, then wins her back. Pax au Telemanus follows her, and she shows Darrow that a Gold can be other than what the Society makes.

She enters Octavia's court as a spy, takes up with Cassius to do it, and leaves Darrow when she works out that his revolution will cost millions of lives.

She returns, learns what he is, and judges for herself. When the war ends it is Virginia who becomes Sovereign, dismantling the Society from its own throne. She has borne Darrow a son in secret.

Ten years later she governs a broken Republic beside a husband who won't take orders, and it falls to her to try to have him arrested.

Luna turns on her through the The Syndicate's schemes, the The Vox Populi riots and a Senate gone feral. She escapes and returns to Mars with emergency war powers.

She loses Phobos, bargains for her soldiers' lives with Lysander, and then grounds her fleet, sending Darrow to the Rim to find a way to change the war.
