Gray
The Society's rank-and-file soldiers and policemen: small, wiry, disciplined and hard to kill. They are the most common face of Gold power, and the hand that actually does it.
Grays are named with ti and are good at knowing exactly how much to care. Holiday, Trigg and Ephraim show what happens when they stop being careful.
They wear gray hair as well as gray uniforms. To Reds in the mines they're Tinpots, and Ugly Dan is the face of the law. Some are kinder than others: Bridge lets Darrow and Eo touch hands on the way to the whipping.
Grays have little use for ideology. They are paid, they are trained very well indeed, and they're the first through any door. A Gold commander who treats them as disposable tends to learn how much of the Society's power was only ever their willingness to show up.
