The strange old genius of Mercury, an Orange builder who raised the wonders of Heliopolis and takes a young Lysander into his confidence.
He sets off the EMP device that cripples Darrow's forces, on Lysander's order.
Lysander's mentor is killed by Atalantia, which is one of very few occasions on which anybody sees Lysander truly grieve.
Glirastes is an Orange who has been allowed to act like a god, because the Golds cannot build what he builds. His cities on Mercury are a kind of argument about what human beings might do if nobody told them where they belonged, though he is not a kind man and he uses people as readily as stone.
